(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Karl Friedrich August Gutzlaff was born on July 8, 1803 in Pyritz (present-day Pyrzyce), Pomerania, in a poor family.
At an early age Karl cherished a strong desire to become a foreign missionary, but the poverty of his parents made it impossible for them to aid him in attaining his wishes, and he became apprentice to a saddler in Stettin. He made known his missionary inclinations to the king of Prussia, through whom he went to the Padagogium in Halle, and afterwards to the mission institute of Janike in Berlin. In 1826, under the auspices of the Netherlands Missionary Society, he went to Java, where he was able to learn Chinese.
Leaving the Missionary Society in 1828, Gutzlaff went to Singapore, and in August of the same year removed to Bangkok, where he translated the Bible into Siamese. He then sailed to Macao in China, where, and subsequently in Hong Kong, he worked at a translation of the Bible into Chinese, published a Chinese monthly magazine, and wrote in Chinese various books on subjects of useful knowledge.
In 1834 he published in London a Journal of Three Voyages along the Coast of China in 1831, 1832 and 1833. He also wrote A Sketch of Chinese History, Ancient and Modern (London, 1834), and a similar work published in German in Stuttgart in 1847; China Opened (1838); and the Life of Taow-Kwang (1851; German edition published in Leipzig in 1852). A complete collection of his Chinese writings is contained in the library in Munich.
In 1835 Gutzlaff was appointed joint Chinese secretary to the English commission, and during the Opium War of 1840-1842 and the negotiations connected with the peace that followed he rendered valuable service by his knowledge of the country and people. In 1844 he founded an institute for training native missionaries, which was so successful that during the first four years as many as forty-eight Chinese were sent out from it to work among their fellow-countrymen. He died on August 9, 1851 in Hong Kong.
Karl Gutzlaff is remembered as one of the first Protestant missionaries in Bangkok, Thailand and Korea. He was also the first Lutheran missionary to China. During the First Opium War he served as interpreter for British diplomatic missions, and he was a founder of the institute for training native missionaries. Besides, he wrote widely read books.
