Education
He attended the academy in Karlsruhe from 1896 to 1901.
Career
After studing he travelled in Europe. During his stay in Rome (1903 - 1908) his paintings were given titles like "Girls on the Seaside" and "Girls at the Window", subjects that he later on was to treat again and again.
The figures in these paintings are plastically seen; the color recedes.
His trips to India in 1909 and 1911 inspired him to accept a free, agitated use of color.
After his internment in France between 1914 and 1917, Hofer came to Switzerland by exchange and returned to Berlin in 1919.
Masks, skeletons, and terrible phantoms, a prophecy of air-raided towns, of the terrors to come, predominated in his work at that time.
When Hitler came to power in 1933, he was dismissed for being a representative of "degenerate art. "
In 1937 all of his works in German museums were confiscated, to be derided in scandalous exhibitions.
Achievements

His work was considered degenerate art by the Nazis, and only after World War II did he regain recognition as one of the greatest German painters.
In 1945, at the close of World War II, Hofer was nominated president of the Hochschule fürfur Bildende Künste; Kunste; mainly thanks to his efforts, an intellectual reorientation and the reconstruction of this institute were made possible. Demons, the embodiment of his bitterness and despair, more and more filled his paintings. His works include paintings, drawings, and graphics; he also wrote books and numerous articles.
