The Knight"s Cross of the Iron Cross and its higher grade Oak Leaves was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. Karl Palmgreen joined the Kaiserliche Marine in 1909. At the end of World World War II, he was chief of the branch Gotenhafen or Libau.
