Spear was the head college football coach for the Baker Wildcats located in Baldwin City, Kansas. He held that position for 17 seasons, from 1946 until 1962. His coaching record at Baker was 87 wins, 61 losses and 4 ties.
As of the conclusion of the 2012 season, this ranks him #3 at Baker in total wins and #9 at the school in winning percentage (586).
After working as head coach, he resigned to become the athletic director of the school. He also coached other sports at Baker, including many years of success as the head golf coach.
He died of cancer in 1981.
