Karl received a Bachelor of Surgery degree in chemistry from Boise State College (1973), and Master of Surgery (1975) and Doctor of Philosophy (1977) degrees in organic chemistry from the University of Illinois.

He is known as the author of many articles and several books mainly focused on software requirements. He is also the author of a memoir of life lessons titled Karl spent 18 years, from 1979 till 1998, at Eastman Kodak Company. In 1997, Karl started his own software process consulting and training company, Process Impact, which focuses on practical software process improvement.
