Das Gute zu vollbringen ift für das einzelne Subject Vfliht, ift niht mehr ein bloß äußerlihes Gefetx fondern ein innerlihes, frei angeeignetes. Das Gute als die Ein: heit des Begriffes des vernünft. Willens u. des befonderen Willens des einzelnen Subjectes ift der Zweck der Welt. Aber in der Vollbringung diefer Vfliht der Verwirklihung des Guten findet fih das Subject in eine Menge von Widerfprühen u. Con: flicten verwickelt; die äußerlihe, objective Welt ift dem Subjecte gegen: über etwas anderes, felbftändiges; es ift alfo zweifelhaft u. zufällig, ob fie mit den fubjectiven moral. Zwecken in Einklang ift od. nicht, ob das Subject in ihr fein Wohl findet 2c. Das abftracte Reht war ein bloß äußerlihes u. formelles, die Moralität ift eine bloß innerlihe, fubjective, hat die Harmonie nur als Voftulat, als ein follen; das Gute ift erft die ab: ftracte Jdee des Guten; es bedarf alfo einer dritten höheren Stufe, in welher die fubjective u. die objective Seite geeint find, wo das Voftulat der Über: einftimmung beider Sphären erfüllt, das follen auh Wirklihkeit ift, wo das Gute nicht mehr ein abftractes allgemeines ift, dem das Subject noch als ein vereinzeltes gegeuüberfteht, fondern wo das Gute Realität gewonnen hat, wo die Freiheit zur Natur, das Gefeh zur _Sitte geworden ift. Career
He eventually became professor ordinarius; and is known as the author of a treatise on Christian ethics (Hand- buck der christlichen Sittenlehre, 1860-1863, 3rd ed. 1874-1875; Eng. trans. , New York, 1873) and works on heathen religion (Die Geschichte des Heidentums, 1851-1853) and superstition {Der deutsche Volksaberglaube der Gegenwart, 1865, and ed. 1869).
He died on the 12th of April 1870.
