He was educated at the Seminary of Freiburg from 1957-1964 and then studied in Rome at the Pontifical Gregorian University where he earned a doctorate in philosophy, summa cum laude in 1962, with a thesis titled "Vom Ursprung und Sinn der Seinsfrage im Denken Martin Heideggers".
He also received a doctorate in theology, summa cum laude, in 1967, with a thesis titled ""Auferweckt am dritten Tag nach der Schrift" — Exegetische und fundamentaltheologische Studien zu 1 Kor 15,3b-5". He was ordained to the priesthood on 10 October 1963 in Rome by Cardinal Julius Döpfner. He served as an assistant to friend professor

He was one of the electors who participated in the papal conclaves of 2005 and 2013 that selected Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis. The Cardinal is beyond the age at which a bishop is required to submit his resignation, but in the Diocese of Mainz the bishop is not appointed by the Pope, but selected by him from three names submitted by the Cathedral Chapter, which is composed of local clergy.
