During World War I, evacuated to Moscow. During the October Revolution 1917, member of the Red Guard. During the Civil War, fought in the Red Army on different fronts.
During the Spanish Civil War, volunteered to fight for the Republicans. Commander of the International Brigade. During World War II, served in the Soviet Army and organized communist sympathizers among Polish POWs.
Member of the Central Committee of the Polish Communist Party. Organized the Polish Army in
the USSR in Sep. 1944, which fought alongside the Soviet Army against the Germans.
Deputy Defence Minister of the Polish (communist) government, February 1946, helped to bring communists to power in Poland with Soviet assistance.
