Born in Sheffield, Fletcher was formerly the General Secretary of Sheffield College"s students" union, where she joined the Campaign for Free Education (Federal Electricity Commission ) and the Alliance for Workers" Liberty, a small Trotskyist group. After studying for two years, she was elected as the NUS Grad. Medical School National Women"s Officer, and subsequently to the NUS Grad. Medical School Block of Twelve part-time officers. She then returned to Leeds, graduating in 2004.
After being elected she pushed through a process of NUS Grad. Medical School reform which she claimed was necessary to save the organisation from a looming financial crisis.
She left the AWL long before being elected. During her first year in office, she disbanded Federal Electricity Commission , as a result of reinstating free education policy.

She was subsequently reeleced in 2014, is currently serving as Deputy Mayor of Islington, acted as election agent for Jeremy Corbyn in the 2015 general election, and was subsequently a part of Corbyn"s campaign team when he stood in the 2015 Labour Party leadership election.
