Gamō Katahide was born in 1534 in Omi Province (Shiga Prefecture). Gamō Katahide was the eldest son of Gamō Sadahide and a retainer of the Oda clan. His mother was a Mabuchi family's daughter.

Originally he served Rokkaku family that belonged to a Japanese samurai clan, but later transfered his allegiance to Nobunaga Oda, who appointed him castellan of Azuchi Castle. After Nobunaga was assassinated by Mitsuhide in Honnōji Temple in 1582, he braved all danger to safely escort Nobunaga's family to his son's Hino Castle, after which he prepared to war against Mitsuhide. Towards his end he served Hideyoshi Toyotomi who was a Japanese warrior, general, samurai, and politician of the Sengoku period and was regarded as Japan's second "great unifier".
Gamō Katahide married the daughter of Goto Katatoyo. He was the father of Gamō Ujisato who became daimyo of the Aizu Domain. His daughter Tora known as Sanjo-dono was one of Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s concubines.
