Katha Pollitt is an American writer, educator and poet. She writes about abortion rights, racism, welfare reform, feminism, and poverty.


Pollitt was born on October 14, 1949 in Brooklyn, New York, United States; the daughter of Basil Riddiford and Leanora (Levine) P.


Pollitt received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Radcliffe College in 1972 and a Master of Fine Arts degree in writing from Columbia University in 1975.


Pollitt began her career as a literature editor of The Nation magazine in New York City and held the positon from 1982 to 1984. Then in 1986, she took a position of a contributing editor for the same magazine and since 1992, she became an associate editor.

Many of Pollitt’s contributions to The Nation are compiled in three books: Reasonable Creatures: Essays on Women and Feminism; Subject to Debate: Sense and Dissents on Women, Politics, and Culture; and Virginity or Death! And Other Social and Political Issues of Our Time.

In addition to her writing, she is a well-known lecturer at dozens of colleges and universities, including Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Brooklyn College, University of California, Los Angeles; the University of Mississippi and Cornell. Pollitt has taught poetry at Princeton, Barnard and the 92nd Street Y and women’s studies at the New School University. Katha has also been published in numerous other periodicals, including The New Yorker, Harper's Magazine, Ms. Magazine, The New York Times, The Atlantic, The New Republic, Glamour, Mother Jones, and the London Review of Books.


  • Pollitt is the Recepient of Guggenheim Fellowship and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.



Pollitt is a member of New York Institute of Humanities.


On June 6, 1987 Katha Pollitt married Randy Cohen. They have a daughter, Sophie Pollitt-Cohen. On April 29, 2006, Pollitt married Steven Lukes.
