Katherine Peter was an American author and educator. She has published more than fifteen books.
Background
Katherine Peter was born on January 17, 1918, in Steven’s Village, Alaska, United States. She was the daughter of Joseph William Divaadido' and Ann William Vilyil'yo. She was adopted by Alaskan native chief’s family in 1927 in Fort Yukon, Alaska, United States. She frequently worked with the family of a missionary who cared for native children while their parents trapped and hunted. She lived in a cold, rather primitive world without phone service, automobiles, and electricity, but has many happy memories of her early life.
Education
Katherine Peter received an eighth-grade education from BIA Elementary School in Fort Yukon, Alaska. She attended Sunday School and taught herself English.
Career
From 1970 to 1980 Katherine Peter was a teacher of Gwich’in language, linguist, a consultant at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. She was also an author, compiler, and translator of textbooks, radio broadcasts, and Alaskan stories. Katherine has published Gineerinlyaa: Poems (1974), Gwich’in ABC Dehtl’yaa (1974), Shih Doo Daazhyaa (1974), Deenaadai’ Gwich’in Gwandak (1975), Gwich’in Gwitr’it Dehlyact (1975), Ko’ehdan (1975), Old’ Daga'at Dik Haa (1975), Shahnyaati' Tr’iinin Nilii Dai’ (1975), Three Stories (1975), etc.
