Kathleen D. Sanford was born on October 4, 1952, in San Diego, California, United States. She is the daughter of Donald B. and Jo Alice (Robertson) Smith.
Kathleen’s education includes a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Maryland/Walter Reed Army Institute of Nursing, a master’s degree in Human Resources Management from Pepperdine University, a master’s degree in business administration from Pacific Lutheran University, and a doctorate in business from Nova Southeastern University.
Sanford's career started as a Walter Reed Army Institute of Nursing scholarship recipient. She served 8 years on active duty with the army and then 26 years more as an Army reserve officer, finishing her military career as a colonel with the Washington Army National Guard. Much of Sanford's progression evolved from early leadership training and opportunities with the military. She was a first lieutenant at 21 and then a head nurse at 23.
Sanford's first civilian job was in Castro Valley, California, at Eden Hospital, where she was hired as the manager of the surgical unit. From California, she returned to her home state of Washington, where she first worked for St. Joseph Hospital in Tacoma as the manager of the orthopaedic unit and surgical progressive care telemetry unit. A few years after that, Sanford moved to Harrison Memorial Hospital in Bremerton as the assistant director of nursing and, the next year, was named vice president for nursing.
Later, Sanford also became the administrator for Harrison’s newly built women and children’s hospital campus in Silverdale, Washington. She worked for a short time with the Multicare system in Tacoma, Washington, reporting through the strategy department.
Sanford joined Catholic Health Initiatives as senior vice president in 2006, and currently works there.
