In GESTURES OF THE BUDDHA, K.I. Matics encompasses the variety in which the Buddha is represented in the Thai tradition. The wealth of knowledge included here reflects the historical, cultural and religious significance of over 80 distinctive poses. Dr. Matic's study is therefore an invaluable addition to the existing collection of scholarly work on the Buddha image, especially in Thailand. However, it can be observed that most texts about the Buddha image in Thailand are written in the Thailanguage. Thus, by reason of the language barrier, the majority of Western readers may be prevented from going deeper into this subject. Another important aspect of the book is that, as Thailand gains greater recognition world-wide, this book serves as a key to understanding the people, culture and traditions that are the essence of Buddhist art in Thailand. Compiled for many years, this work is meant to be a layman's handbook for easy reference. It has the distinction of being the first English-language text published by the Chulalongkorn University Press. Illustrated by 81 drawing, 4 maps and 110 black-and-white photographs of some of Thailand's most interesting and unusual depictions of the Buddha.
