Kathlyn received a B. A. in sociology from the University of California, Berkeley and a Ph.D. in politics from Princeton University.
Kathlyn worked as an assistant director of National Institute for Sentencing Alternatives at Brandeis University, Waltham, from 1980 until 1981. Gaubatz was a coordinator of New England Coalition Against Prisons, Boston, in 1981-1982. She was counselor at Compass Community Services, San Francisco between 1989 and 1990. Then she was a coordinator and case manager in Homeless Family Program in 1990-1991. Thereafter she was program director at CCR Family Center and Market Street Counseling Center from 1991 until 1994 and executive director since 1994.
She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
Kathlyn married Kurt Gaubatz on May 31, 1980. The couple has 2 children: Jayne, Andrew.
