Kathryn Jarrell Gutzwiller was born on September 25, 1948, in Hinton, West Virginia, United States, to Edward McQue and Nadine (Watts) Jarrell.
In 1970, Kathryn received a Bachelor of Arts from Marshall University. In 1971, she received a Master of Arts from Bryn Mawr College and a Doctor of Philosophy from University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1977.
From 1977 to 1978, Kathryn Gutzwiller was a visiting lecturer at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. From 1978 to 1985, she was a assistant professor of classics at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio, and then, from 1986 to 1987, she became a Mather Professor at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and Shera Assistant Professor from 1987 to 1989.
Gutzwiller also was associate professor at the University of Cincinnati, in 1989, then she became a professor of classics, in 1989.

2005Gutzwiller is a member of the American Philological Association, Classical Association Middle West and South and Ohio Classical Conference. From 1993 to 1994, Kathryn held the presidential position at the Ohio Classical Conference.
