Watterson was born on February 4, 1942 in Iowa City, Iowa, United States; the daughter of Robert Percy Watterson and Grace (Green) Watterson.
Watterson received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Arizona in 1965.
Watterson began her career as a feature writer and reporter of Fort Lauderdale News in 1964. Two years later she took a position of an editor of The Pittsburgh Press. Also Kathryn served as a teacher at Technology Teacher's Training College from 1966 to 1969.
In 1969, she became a reporter and feature writer of The Philadelphia Evening Bulletin. Then in 1973, Watterson was appointed a feature writer of The Philadelphia Inquirer Magazine and held it for a year. There she wrote articles on a variety of topics, from the Army Corps, flooding Native American lands to profiling the Medical Examiner.
In addition, she served as an editor of Princeton: With One Accord in 1995-1999. She taught at Princeton University and at the University of Pennsylvania.
