Katsuhito Nishikawa was born in 1949 in Tokyo, Japan.
After studying at Keio University, Faculty of Business and Commerce in Tokyo, Katsuhito completed a qualification at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, Germany, in 1976 and at the Staatliche Kunstakademie of the city of Düsseldorf, Germany, in 1981.
After having come to settle partially in Europe in the early 1980s, Katsuhito was exposed in Japan, the United States, South Korea, Germany, Italy, Brazil, Great Britain and France where he signed twenty or so public commissions in the urban space.
Katsuhito's work operates in cycles of white sculptures inspired by nature as architectural achievements, playing on the concept of different scales and varied materials. Among the works of that period can be mentioned "Innercouryard of Sintra", created in 1992, "Aqua", created in 2000, or the emblematic cycle of Physalis that he began in 1998. The "Color as shadow" cycle, made up of colored plexiglas screens, was shown in Europe and Asia.
In 1999, he exhibited a work titled "Physalis Hanging on the Champs-Elysées" as part of the international exhibition Les Champs de la Sculpture. This work, produced by the Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations, was then presented to the Musée des Beaux- Douai Arts in Northern France. It is now installed permanently on the banks of the Scarpe, Douai.
Moreover, on December 15, 2006, he inaugurated "Physalis Partitura", historic public commission in the courtyard of the University Hospital of Lille, with grants from the Ministry of Culture and Communication and the ERDF. The 5,500 m2 work consists of the creation of a pacifying esplanade planted with magnolias and 24 sculpture-physalis powdered marble and white concrete, as well as a set of 60 pieces of furniture in birch from Finland in the interior reception areas of Huriez Hospital.
In 2012, at the request of the ARTE television channel, Katsuhito made a collection of 35 sculptures under the title "Traces." For many years he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg, Germany, and the School of Art and Design in Reims, France. He currently lives on the Island of Hombroich in Neuss, Germany.
Katsuhito Nishikawa adheres to the artistic traditions of Minimalism.
