岩佐勝重
He was the son of Matabe Iwasa, and also known as Gembe.
He studied under his father but he never reached the latter's high standards in art. It is said that after the Fukui Castle was burned down he was inspired by a dream and painted Gunkakuzu (cranes in flight) on a gold-leaf screen (1669). His portrait of Hitomaro (a waka poet) which is in the Imperial Museum reveals his father’s influence over his works.
