Kattassery Yesudas is one of the most eminent Indian classical musicians and leading playback singer of film songs Yesudas sings Indian classical music, devotional and popular songs. He has recorded more than 40,000 songs in many languages including Sanskrit, Russian, Arabic, Latin and English through his long career. He also composed a number of Malayalam film songs in the 1970s and 1980s.
Background
Kattassery Joseph Yesudas was born on 10th of January, 1940 in Fort Kochi, Kerala, into a Roman Catholic Latin Rite family to Augustine Joseph and Alicekutty. His father, who was a well-known Malayalam classical musician and stage actor, was his first guru. Later he joined the Music Academy in Thrippunithura and underwent training. Yesudas started playback singing in the middle of the 1960's and in middle of 70's he entered in Bollywood.
Education
He could not complete his studies due to financial constraints.
Career
He got the first break in his music career with the hit Malayalam film named "Bharya". While working in Bollywood he has sung Hindi songs for many leading actors in Hindi cinema including Amitabh Bachchan, Amol Palekar and Jeetendra.
In 1980 Yesudas established the Tharangani Studio at Trivandrum.
In 2006, he sang 16 film songs in four South Indian languages on the same day at AVM Studio, Chennai. He frequently serves as a cultural ambassador for India through his performances abroad, promoting Indian music.
