Kaya Scodelario is a British actress best known for her role as Effy Stonem in the teen drama series Skins. She is also known for portraying Teresa in The Maze Runner film series (2014–2018).
Background
Ethnicity:
Scodelario's father was English and her mother is Brazilian, of Italian and Portuguese descent.
Kaya Scodelario was born as Kaya Rose Humphrey in Haywards Heath, West Sussex, in England, on 13 March 1992. Her mother, Katia Scodelario, is a Brazilian from Itu, São Paulo, who moved to England in 1990; Scodelario's surname comes from her mother's Italian grandfather. Her father, Roger Humphrey (died 22 November 2010), was British. Her surname comes from her mother's Italian grandfather. Thanks to her mother, Kaya grew up fluent in Brazilian Portuguese, as well as English. Scodelario does not speak a word English with her mother. Both are only conversing in Portuguese, which is her mother's native language. Her parents divorced when she was still very young. She was, therefore, raised by her mother, whose surname she eventually adopted.
Education
Kaya attended Islington Arts and Media School in London, United Kingdom. She has suffered from dyslexia which is a reading disorder and has no relation to the level of intelligence. Kaya said that dyslexia is something that has affected her self-esteem a lot. At school, she was subject to bullying and had her childhood spent with low self-respect which led her to become an actress.
As a teenager at the young age of 14, Kaya made up her mind to chase a career in acting. Luckily, her first try at an audition was successful. At the auditions, Scodelario became discouraged as she felt she was too young, but a producer told her to stay and she was asked to read for the part. She successfully auditioned for the part of Effy Stonem on Skins, the series which sought young inexperienced actresses. Though initially, she had minimal speaking lines, the significance of her character grew as the series developed. Though the series earned positive reviews from the critics, it also kindled considerable controversy because of its depiction of teen sexuality.
At the forefront of many disasters, including stalkers, death, and sexual pressures, Effy became a fan favorite for her ability to resolve testing life situations while keeping her head above water. As the character and the role grew, Scodelario enjoyed depicting what she described as the realistic trials and challenges Effy faced with friendships, relationships, and adolescence. After two seasons of Skins, the series endured an overhaul at the end of 2007. Feeling that most of the characters had run their course, the writers wrote out every character except Effy. This put significantly more pressure on Scodelario because it meant that she would be the most recognizable face for season three. As she waited for the new season of Skins to begin, she took advantage of her recent clout to seek out additional career opportunities. She joined the elite agency Models 1 and soon was featured as the cover model for SuperSuper Magazine. Scodelario left after the fourth series, making way for the third generation of characters. Her performance was praised by critics, and she was nominated twice for Best Actress at the TV Quick Awards, in 2009 and 2010.
Scodelario made her film debut with a supporting role in the sci-fi film Moon in 2009, starring Sam Rockwell as an astronaut suffering from surreal encounters while on the moon. Directed by Duncan Jones, the film earned nearly twice its budget. The film won many awards and was also nominated for BAFTA Awards in the category of Best British Film. In her second film, Shank, she plays a teenager, Tasha. The film was released on 26 March 2010.
Scodelario was next seen in the 2010 fantasy film Clash of the Titans. The film was based on the Greek myth of Perseus. Though the movie performed well financially, it was met with negative reviews from the critics.
Scodelario appeared in the British action movie Shank. The film was met with negative reviews. Her next film, Wuthering Heights, was also a huge commercial disaster. However, it won several awards and received mixed to favorable reviews. The news website Salon placed it on the top of their list of the Best Movies of 2012. She next appeared in the teen drama film Now is Good, the Comedy film Spike, and the thriller film Twenty8k.
In 2013, she played an important role in the drama thriller film The Truth about Emanuel. Written, directed, and produced by Francesca Gregorini, the film won multiple awards, though it didn’t fare well financially. Along with the rest of the cast, Scodelario won the Ashland Independent Film Award for her performance in the category of Best Ensemble. The same year, she also appeared in the short film Walking Stories. The next year, she was seen in the thriller film Tiger House.
Scodelario's popularity increased after she played one of the main roles in the 2014 dystopian sci-fi film The Maze Runner. The film follows the story of a teenage boy who awakens in a maze with no idea of who he is. The film was a financial success, earning more than ten times its budget of $34 million. It won a few awards and was met with average reviews. She reprised her role in the films Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015) and Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018) which were also huge commercial successes.
Another important work in her career is the fantasy swashbuckler film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. It was the fifth film of the Pirates of the Caribbean film series. The film was a huge success commercially and was met with average reviews.
The year 2019 brought three new projects for Scodelario. The first, released in May 2019, was Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, about serial killer Ted Bundy, where she portrays his wife Carole Ann Boone. The second has Scodelario cast as the lead in Alexandre Aja's latest horror film, Crawl, which is being filmed in Belgrade. The third is yet to be announced, but the mystery project was filmed in Lithuania. Scodelario has been attached to star in a modern-day retelling of Romeo and Juliet called Die in a Gunfight, where Scodelario will play Mary, the Juliet character. The film was said to go into production in the fall of 2018, but nothing has come of it yet. However, Scodelario has signed up to lead a new Netflix series, an edgy figure skating drama called Spinning Out in 2019. In Spring 2019, Scodelario became the face of Cartier's new jewelry line, Clash de Cartier. The new collection celebrates duality, opposite styles that may appear contradictory, but harmonize to create a stylish shake-up.
In recognition of her talents as an actress, Kaya Scodelario has been nominated for multiple awards throughout her career. Her first nomination was the Golden Nymph Award for Best Actress in 2008. This was for her role in the TV series, Skins. Despite numerous nominations, she has only won one award. In 2013, she won the Ashland Independent Film Award for Best Acting Ensemble. This was for The Truth About Emanuel and she shared the award with Jessica Biel, Frances O’Connor, Alfred Molina, Aneurin Barnard, and Jimmi Simpson. Most recently, she was nominated for the 2017 Teen Choice Awards for Choice Movie Actress: Action for her role in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. She was ranked #12 on Portrait Magazine's Top 30 Under 30 list 2013. She was also voted 13th in the UK edition of FHM's 100 World's Sexiest Women 2010.

Religion
Kaya Scodelario has never publicly spoken out about her religious views despite having roots in the highly Catholic country of Brazil.
Politics
Kaya seems to have not been outspoken about her political views but if we go by her Twitter feed then she seems to be a big supporter of the Labour party in the 2017 United Kingdom General Elections and backing Jeremy Corbyn as a candidate. She also declared that she registered to vote in just 5 minutes adding that: "This is our future". Jeremy Corbyn lost the election slimly to Theresa May and Kaya doesn't seem to be a big fan of hers.

Quotations:
"I don't think that I could ever play just a 'pretty girlfriend' or just a stereotypical female part that's just there to get her tits out - that just doesn't interest me at all, really. I just want to keep pushing myself with every role and keep pushing myself with every film."
"My mom taught me at a very early age that beauty is not the most important thing in the world. Always be kind, polite, and humble and treat everyone around you with thanks. Because beauty does not last forever, but feelings do."
"I don't go for roles that are two-dimensional. They are all layered and none of my roles are damsel in distresses, so it is really cool that we are starting to reflect that in the movies now. It is refreshing, but it's also becoming more and more common, which is great. We have really cool female roles at the moment, however, I believe we still have a very long way to go and I'm proud and glad I get to be part of the change."
"I like the idea of up-and-coming actors nowadays being a little different and not necessarily the drama-school stereotype, being a bit more edgy."
Personality
From 2008 to 2010, Scodelario lived alone in a flat in North London, saying that it is important for women to be "independent and strong". Scodelario has dyslexia and tweeted in 2010, "Watching an interesting doc on BBC Three about dyslexia, something that I have struggled with my whole life. It really affected my self-esteem." She has a French Bulldog named Arnie and says that she named the dog after Hollywood fame and legend Arnold Schwarzenegger because she is a huge fan of his and says his movies were "pure Hollywood" to her.
In October 2017, as part of the MeToo movement, Scodelario revealed that she had been sexually assaulted thirteen years previously by somebody who is protected by "family members" in Brazil.
Physical Characteristics:
Scodelario has a height of 5 ft 6 in or 168 cm, and a weight of 55 kg or 121 pounds. She also has dark brown hair and blue eyes. She has a shared tattoo with an ex-boyfriend, Elliott Tittensor, that says "our love is unique" in Portuguese. She also has a tattoo that says "Ben" (the name of her husband Benjamin Walker) in cursive script on the inside of her left ring finger.

Connections
Scodelario dated her Skins co-star Jack O'Connell for about a year before they split up in June 2009, remaining good friends. She was in a relationship with Elliott Tittensor from late 2009 to early 2014. During their relationship, she supported Tittensor after his arrest for hitting someone while driving an uninsured car.
Kaya Scodelario is married to an American actor and stand-up comedian, Benjamin Walker. The couple met in April 2014 on the set of the film The King’s Daughter which was released in 2016. On December 28, 2014, Benjamin proposed to Kaya and the two became engaged. In a social media post, Kaya revealed that she had her boyfriend’s name “Ben” tattooed on her ring finger. The couple remained engaged for a year before tying the knot in December 2015. Their son was born in November 2016. Actor Daniel Kaluuya is her son's godfather. The first photos of the baby that Kaya posted online showed only his hand. In addition to avoiding showing the face of their baby, the couple has also not dropped his name.
