1899 graduate Mining Institute in Saint St. Petersburg.
From 1901 worked for Geological Committee (1941 reorganized as Oil and Geological Survey Research Institute). Led numerous geological expeditions in oil districts of Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics (Centr Asia, the Caucasus, etc). Compiled still valid geological maps and accounts of oil deposits.
Invented method of drafting structural maps for correct surveying and operation of oil deposits. Compiled one of first textbooks on the geology of oil from a course of lectures which he read in 1920-1922 at the Petrograd Mining Institute. Investigated stratigraphy and tectonics of various regions, also the origin of oil and formation of oil deposits.
Developed hypothesis that oil originated from marine plants.
