Keifuku Kudara was a man given to pleasure, but as he was also wise and talented, Emperor Shomu patronized him and made him Lord of Mutsu (northeast province of Japan). Later Keifuku Kudara was appointed Minister to Imperial Household and it is said to have forced Emperor Junnin to abdicate under pressure of ex-Empress regnant Koken (764). He supplied some of the gold used in the gold leafing of the statue of the Daibutsu at the Todai-ji in Nara.
