Keisai Kuwagata was born in Edo (now Tokyo).

Education

Keisai Kuwagata studied under Shigemasa Kitao to become a versatile painter.

Career

His works were mostly genre pictures and portraits of warriors. Also Keisai Kuwagata illustrated story books and excelled in painting by hand and drawing sketches of customs and manners of his time.

Achievements

• One of his masterpieces, a complete picture scroll of craftsmen and artisans, can be seen in the National Museum.
