Keita Ikebe was born in 1798. he was the the son of Chojuro, an instructor of astronomy and surveying.
He studied surveying under Tadataka Ino, astronomy under Chusuke Suetsugu and gunnery from Shuhan Takashima.
Keita Ikebe and his master, Shuhan, were later sentenced to five years' imprisonment by the Shogunate for criticizing its closed-door foreign policy (1842).
While he was in jail his wife became mentally unbalanced and died.
