Kelly Dwyer was born on February 28, 1964, in Torrance, California, United States. She is the daughter of Richard Stanley and Sharon Arlene (Speigler) Dwyer.
Kelly received a Bachelor of Arts from Oberlin College in 1987 and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Iowa in 1990.
Kelly Dwyer began her career as a teaching assistant at the University of Iowa in 1988. In 1994 she started working as a visiting assistant professor at Oberlin College, Ohio.
She has written two novels, The Tracks of Angels and Self-Portrait with Ghosts, published by Penguin, New York, and two children's books, published by ArchitectureKids. She co-founded the campus literary magazine, Spirit Lake Review, and continues to teach students how to create one of the top literary magazines in the University of Wisconsin system. A travel lover and advocate of study abroad programs, Kelly advises the Scotland club on campus and has taught in the Wisconsin in Scotland program twice. She taught "British Ghost Stories: Landscape as Inspiration" in 2011 and that same course, plus "Wish You Were Here: The Art & Craft of Travel Writing" in 2016.
Currently Kelly lives in Wisconsin with her husband and daughter, where she teaches creative writing part-time. She is working on her third novel, a ghost story set in Wisconsin, as well as a collection of plays and flash fiction pieces. She also writes travel stories and does freelance editing.
