He was born on February 10, 1940, at Ralikokha, a village in the Central Region near Kasungu.

Educated locally, then at Mzuzu Secondary School. After qualifying in 1960 from Sochc Teachers’ Training College he went to England in 1961 and obtained a certificate of education at Bristol University.
While teaching he wrote a book in the Chitumbaka language and studied Privately for a degree. In 1965 he became a teacher at Chiradzulu Secondary School and two years later was promoted headmaster there. He entered the National Assembly after his election victory at Kasungu North on August 14, 1971.
