Ken-ichi Tanabe was born in 1918.
He graduated from Tokyo University (1940).
He became consecutively a technician at the postgraduate course of the university, at the geographic investigation laboratory, and took up the post of professor of Tohoku University (1947).
He headed, with Professor Tomita, the Geographical Studies Class at the university. He was editor of Geography of Northeastern Japan, and president of the Tohoku Geographical Association, counselor of the Japan Geographic Association, director of the Japan Municipal Association.
