Ken Straiton earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 1972 from the University of Waterloo, Ontario. He also studied at Simon Fraser University Film Workshop, Vancouver, Canada, from 1974 to 1976.
In 1979 Ken Straiton taught photography at Emily Carr College of Art in Vancouver and worked as a production manager and designer for Integra Construction, Ltd. He has made two 16mm films: Point of Departure (1976) and Windows (1974).
1984 saw Ken Straiton move to Tokyo, where he spent 26 years working in commercial and corporate photography and producing magazine features. From the time he moved to Tokyo, that city became a focus of personal work.
Ken Straiton has also been documenting disappearing cultures and landscapes in China and Southeast Asia.
