Kengyo Ishimura went to Loochoo Islands (1592) and was deeply impressed with a musical instrument named Kokyu (three stringed and played with a small bow). Returned home and modeled the first samisen, using the features of Kokyu and the biwa as a guide. Is also said to have composed the samisen tune known as Loochoo-gumi.
