Kengyo Kitajima was a disciple of Yatsuhashi Kengyo.
Kengyo Kitajima composed many koto melodies including such tunes as Hashiliime, Akashi and Utsusemi. Later improved the tsume (plectrum) and changed its circular shape to a square, which he bequeathed to his disciple Ikuta Kengyo.
Ikuta Kengyo later founded the Ikutaryu school.
