He was said to have been a disciple of Ishimura-Kengyo or Takino-Kengyo.
Kengyo Sawazumi was a master player of biwa (lute) and koto (13-stringed harp) employed by Samon Toda, Lord of Amagasaki (1615-1624). He was also a protege of Tofukumon-in, Consort of Emperor Gomino-o.
He became adept at playing the samisen, a new musical instrument in those days. According to some sources, he composed samisen music for joruri written by Otsu Ono and this brought about the heyday of joruri accompanied by the samisen.
Physical Characteristics: He was a blind man.
