Tsuyama Kengyo's date of birth is unknown. He was born in Nagoya, Japan.
Kengyo Tsuyama rose to become one of the greatest samisen players of his time. His artistry was much admired and his tunes came to be called after him as Tsuyama-bushi.
He is also said to have designed his own samisen plectrum which is known as Tsuyamabachi, and which is still in use in the Kansai area. Some of his famous tunes which are still played today are Edo Miyage (Memories of Edo) and Nanakusa (Seven Herbs).
