Kengyo Yanagawa was born in Japan.
During the Kan-ei Era (1624-1644) Kengyo Yanagawa and Yatsuhashi Kengyo reigned supreme as the two most outstanding composers of samisen music. Later he moved to Tokyo and took to himself the name of Yanagawa. Kengyo Yanagawa composed eight melodies for the samisen.
