Background

Kengyo Yanagawa was born in Japan.

Career

During the Kan-ei Era (1624-1644) Kengyo Yanagawa and Yatsuhashi Kengyo reigned supreme as the two most outstanding composers of samisen music. Later he moved to Tokyo and took to himself the name of Yanagawa. Kengyo Yanagawa composed eight melodies for the samisen.

Achievements

• Founder of Yanagawa school of samisen composers. He was conferred the rank of Kengyo.
