Kenji Shimomura was born on September 20, 1902 in Saga, Japan.
He attended Keio University and became a researcher on living birds and animals in the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. Later he was transferred to the film unit of the Science Research Institute.
Kenji Shimomura produced a documentary titled "Aruhino Higata" (A Day At An Inlet) which was awarded a prize by the Ministry of Education (1939). Since then he was ranked high as a producer of documentary films. He won international fame with his productions of "Tori" (Bird) and "Konlwndori" (Story of Konkon Bird) (1942 and 1949 respectively). Both films were also awarded prizes by the Ministry of Education.
