Kenji Susukida (Real name: Tokuemon Takayama) was born in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan on September 14, 1898.
After the death of Kaoru Osanai he organized the New Tsukiji Dramatic Company with Sadao Maruyama and Yasue Yamamoto and successfully staged such plays as "All Quiet on the Western Front" and Tsuchi (Soil). After the war was associated with Shinkyo Theatrical Company and played leading roles in Misuta Jinrui (Mr. Mankind), Ningen Seihon (The Bookbinding of Man) and other plays. Later parted from Tomoyoshi Murayama and founded the Central Art Theatre and began putting on plays with literary themes (1951).
Immediately after divorcing his first wife he married Reiko Uchida, an actress in the Shinkyo Dramatic Company. He lost his eldest son in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.
