He graduates from Tokyo University in 1907.
He was appointed professor at Kyushu University (1924) and stayed there till he retired due to age limit (1943), and became emeritus professor. Later professor at Kurume University (1950).His main works are “A Study of Japanese Religions” and “A Study of Japanese Cultural History' The former consists of essays on religious organizations centering round Shinran and Rennyo during the Muromachi Period and the early Christian era. The latter contains essays after the introduction of firearms to Japan.
