Kenkichi Sugimoto was born on September 20, 1905 in Nagoya, Japan.
He studied under Ryusei Kishida, noted oil painter.
He joined the Kokugakai (National Art Society) (1938). Originally he was known as a poster artist but later turned a conventional Western-style painter. Drawing the landscapes or Buddhist statues in the Yamato and Nara districts, he has succeeded in putting into his pictures the touch of Haiga (Haiku picture). He became popular as the illustrator of Shin Heike Monogatari (A New Tale of the Taira Clan), a popular historical novel by Eiji Yoshikawa.
