Kenmotsu Nagaoka was born in 1812.
Was a chief retainer of the Hi go Clan (Kumamoto Prefecture) toward the end of the Shdgunate. A just and wise man, he followed the Mito doctrines, which defines the relations between a sovereign and subjects and rendered invaluable services in reforming clan administration. It was mainly due to his sagacity that the Hi go Clan came to play an important role during the turbulent days prior to the Meiji Restoration (1868). With the opening of Japanese ports to foreign ships he was placed in charge of coastal defenses in Sagami (Kanagawa Prefecture).
