Here is a broad intermediate-level survey of the basic phenomena, theory, and data of ionospheric radio propagation. Published originally as a National Bureau of Standards Monograph, it is now being made generally available. The primary objective of the book is to provide a staring point for research workers and students entering the field. It is also of value, as a reference source, to the more experienced workers in the field. It has been described as the "plain man's guide to radio propagation." The book is particularly valuable in that it includes developments resulting from the International Geophysical Year (1957-58), The International Year of the Quiet Sun (1964-65), and the early years of the Space Age. It has the added advantage of having been prepared by an internationally recognized authority in the field from the point of view of both government research and university teaching. The content of the book is perhaps best gleaned from the following list of chapter headings: the earth's atmosphere, geomagnetism, the sun, magnetoionic theory of wave propagation, synoptic studies of the ionosphere , oblique propagation, signal strength, ionospheric disturbances (storms, sudden frequency deviations, polar cap absorption, etc.), ionospheric propagation predictions, scatter propagation at very high frequencies, and propagation of low and very low frequency waves. Certain sub-topics, notably electron-layer productions, the geomagnetic field, magnetoionic theory, oblique propagation, receive detailed treatment because of the extent of recent findings. Profusely illustrated (there are well over 200 figures and tables in the text) and with a total of 266 bibliographical and source references, the book is a must for the engineering library, for the classroom, for research workers, and for communications engineers who already have some background knowledge of radio propagation via the ionosphere.

(This book is aimed at professional scientists, engineers ...)
This book is aimed at professional scientists, engineers and students who need an intermediate-level reference and/or text. Students of aeronomy and radio wave propagation are introduced to basic wave theory in absorbing, anisotropic and dispersive media and to the physics of production, loss, and movement of plasma in the ionosphere presence of the geomagnetic field.
