After serving with the Royal Engineers of the British Army during World War II, Haley began a thirty-five-year career teaching history at the University of Sheffield in England. His first book, "William III and the English Opposition, 1672-1674", was published in 1953. His other works included "The Dutch in the Seventeenth Century", "The British and the Dutch", "Politics in the Reign of Charles II", and "An English Diplomat in the Low Countries: Sir William Temple and John de Witt 1665-72." He also wrote articles for historical journals and served as the editor of "The Historical Association Book of the Stuarts."
