(This text takes a critical approach to the analysis of 17...)
This text takes a critical approach to the analysis of 17 major social problems confronting the world today, examining both the causes and human implications of those problems. The text is divided into two major parts. The first part focuses on macro problems or large societal issues such as homelessness or racism. The second half of addresses micro problems of an individual nature such as drug abuse and suicide. The text is designed not only to impart information but also to inspire informed thought and discussion of the issues. It attempts to do this by providing in each chapter the causes, effects, and possible steps toward solving the problem at hand. There is a separate chapter on suicide for those who wish to cover that topic in greater detail and two separate chapters on drug abuse and alcoholism, allowing for more comprehensive coverage. Heavy emphasis is placed on the use of data and empirical studies.

(Welfare Racism analyzes the impact of racism on US welfar...)
Welfare Racism analyzes the impact of racism on US welfare policy. Through historical and present-day analysis, the authors show how race-based attitudes, policymaking, and administrative policies have long had a negative impact on public assistance programs. The book adds an important and controversial voice to the current welfare debates surrounding the recent legislation that abolished the AFDC.

(This text offers students a lively, provocative introduct...)
This text offers students a lively, provocative introduction to the principles of sociology. It encourages students to develop what C. Wright Mills called a "sociological imagination," enabling them to see how their position in society and in history shapes their personal lives. Using a critical approach, the authors raise analytical questions and explore the social forces that affect each individual's life and life chances. While focusing on the influence of power and privilege on society’s haves and have-nots, the authors suggest the need for social change.

In Welfare Racism, Neubeck and Cazenave analyze the effect racism has had on welfare policies in the United States. They discuss how it has become acceptable for politicians to discuss and consider race when establishing welfare policies. They note that the majority of the public unfairly believes that most people on welfare are black and that they are poor because they are lazy. The authors believe that this type of racism hurts everyone, not just people of color, and they offer suggestions on how to end it.
Kenneth J. Neubeck is best known as the co-author of Welfare Racism: Playing the Race Card Against America’s Poor. It has won awards such as the Michael Harrington Distinguished Scholarship Award from the National Forum on Poverty and Inequality and the Outstanding Book Award from the American Sociological Association.
