This critical survey of James Agee treats the entire range of his work- the poetry, scenarios, fiction, and criticism- in terms of an aesthetic ideal. The first section of the book is largely biographical, and discusses Agee's very early poetry and plays. "The Failure of Form" is concerned with Agee's lyrics, sonnets, and long poems. The third part discusses "Let Us Now Praise Famous Men" as both literature and reportage. The remaining three sections deal with the shorter fiction, the two novels (The Morning Watch and A Death in the Family), and Agee's firm scripts and criticism.
