(The vast, open plains of the Texas Panhandle appear decep...)
The vast, open plains of the Texas Panhandle appear deceptively void of birdlife, but subtle regional variations provide rich and varied avifauna. For each of the more than four hundred species found in this region, author Kenneth D. Seyffert provides information on the bird's status, occurrence, and nesting habits. Ten elegant line drawings also accompany the text. Birds of the Texas Panhandle is a must for those already familiar with the avifauna of the Panhandle and an eyeopener for those skeptical of the abundance of birdlife in the region.

Kenneth D. Seyffert was born on September 12, 1927, in Corsicana, Texas, United States. He is the son of Walter Henry, Sr. and Maud Knapp Seyffert.
Kenneth Seyffert attended Southern Methodist University and the University of Texas at Austin.
Kenneth D. Seyffert began his professional career at Illinois-California Express, Inc. as an office manager in 1950, the position he held till 1984. He also realized his interest in birds and became regional director at Texas Breeding Bird Atlas Project. He also began writing articles contributing to Bulletin of the Oklahoma Ornithological Society and Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society. He was also a subregional editor of North American Birds.
His writing includes Birds of the Texas Panhandle: Their Status, Distribution, and History, illustrated by Carolyn Stallwitz (2001). The Texas Panhandle is the least known and understood region of the state insofar as its birdlife is concerned. Seyffert's motivation in writing on its birds was to correct this deficiency. Not only was it his wish to write on the current status of the region's birds, but also he wanted to make their histories known, going back to the early and mid-nineteenth century.
Kenneth D. Seyffert is an avocational birder who is known throughout the state and nationally as an authority on the birds of the Panhandle. His awards include Certificates of Recognition from the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (1997 and 2001) for outstanding contributions to America's natural and cultural resources, Certificate of Appreciation from Lone Star Legends, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (1999), and Outstanding Volunteer Award in conservation category from Texas Audubon Society (2000).
