Appointed Deputy - Commissioner and ViceConsul in the Oil Rivers Protectorate and adjoining Native Territories, 1891. Acting Commissioner and Consul - General, 1893. Served in operations against Chief Nanna in Benin River, 1894 (despatches, medal with clasp).
Accompanied Naval Brigade in China (1900) from taking of Taku Forts until relief of Tientsin and capture of Tientsin native city by the Allied Forces, as correspondent (medal). Raised 26th Canadian Horse, 1910. Decorated for various sendees West Coast of Africa on special service.
Awarded bronze medal of Royal Humane Society for saving a native from the Vice-Consulate hulk in a river where crocodiles abound. Companion of the Distinguished Service Order, 1896.
