Kensaku Segoe was born on May 22, 1889 in Hiroshima, Japan.
Kensaku Segoe was trained as a professional since the age of five. After graduating from middle school, he went to Tokyo and joined the Hoensha Go Society, acquired the Third Rank and studied under Kenzo Iwasaki, holder of the Eighth Rank.
He then switched to the Hiseikai, another go club. Belonged to the Nihon Kiin after it absorbed the Hiseikai (1924). Rose to the Seventh Rank (1932) and later acquired the Eighth Rank. He toured the United States (1950).
Segoe had Go Seigen, Utaro Hashimoto, and Cho Hunhyun as pupils. He also authored numerous books, such as his Tesuji Dictionary (with Go Seigen) and Go proverbs Illustrated. An internal quarrel in the Nihon Ki-in led to his becoming an isolated, if very much respected, figure. His participation in competition post-1945 was quite low.
He committed suicide on July 27, 1972, shortly after his pupil Cho Hun-hyun returned to South Korea for military service.
