Was originally a shipbuilder, but later turned ceramist and had a kiln in Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture, a porcelain insulator in Yokosuka and brick baking plant at Kosuge, Tokyo. Began manufacturing beads for ladies hair dressings (1875) which became popularly known as Kenya beads. His works were mostly modeled after those of Kenzan Ogata, though he was also skilled in making Haryu Ogawa style of ceramics.
