Kenzan Nonaka was born in 1615 in Himeji, Hyogo, Japan.
Kenzan Nonaka studied under Jichii Tani.
Kenzan Nonaka reformed clan administration and promoted industry in the province. He fostered an asari (a kind of edible shellfish) fishing industry on the Tosa coast by bringing seed asari. It was due to encouragement by Kenzan that the Chutze school of Confucian learning of Ansai Yamazaki became popular. He was discharged from his high post in the clan because of his uncompromising character as well as because of the fact that the Shogunate was displeased by his being a favorite of Yorinobu Tokugawa, Lord of Kii Province (Wakayama Prefecture).
His daughter, En Nonaka, was born in 1661 in Sukumo, Kochi, Japan. She died in 1726 in Kochi, Japan.
