Background
American etcher, was born in Tokyo, Japan, Oct. 19, 1889, to a Canadian missionary family which left Japan for Canada when Eby was three years old. In the years between 1907 and 1911 Eby spent brief periods in study at Pratt Institute and at the Art Students' League, in New York City, and also worked for a lithographic company. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1917, his war experiences furnishing subject matter for many of his prints; his book, War, was privately printed and later, in 1936, published by the Yale University Press. Eby reported U.S. Marine Corps action in the south Pacific in 1943 and 1944. He is best known for his war prints and for quiet etchings of the Connecticut countryside and the Maine coast. Eby died at Norwalk, Conn., Nov. 18, 1946.
