Walters earned his Bachelor (Philosophy, 1976) at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, his Master of Arts (Philosophy, 1980) at Marquette University, and his Doctor of Philosophy (Philosophy, 1985) at the University of Cincinnati.
He has taught at Gettysburg College since 1985. His 1998 book Benjamin Franklin and His Gods is regarded as the definitive study of Franklin"s religion. Walters has held the William Bittinger Chair of Philosophy since 2000.
Prior to that, he served as the Edwin T. and Cynthia Johnson Distinguished Teaching Professor.
